The Next Phase of Top Level Domains Begins
Are you ready for new generic top level domain names (TLDs)? In the next two months, ICANN will release the results of its initial evaluations of all the new TLD applications, and we’re really excited! It won’t be long before New TLDs applicants such as United TLD begin launching their TLD and you can start collecting Sunrise orders from your interested customers. Here’s a rundown of what’s in store - or skip ahead to the bottom to start collecting leads right away.
Similar TLDs are announced – ICANN just released its list of TLD applications that it has determined to be too similar with one another. You can see the list here. Those applicants that have applied for similar TLDs that are “in contention” will have to resolve amongst themselves who gets the TLD or, in the alternative, go to an auction.
Objection Period Ends – TLD applicants and the public must file any objections by March 13th. Objections against applications may be made by governments or rights holders for the following reasons: a) TLD string confusion with an existing TLD string; b) violation of legal rights (e.g., trademark rights); c) the TLD string is contrary to generally accepted legal norms of morality and public order; or d) opposition from the community to which the TLD may be targeted.
New TLD Launches Begin – The first new TLD evaluations will be released in mid-April and then we’ll get a steady stream of results back about each application. Those new TLDs that have passed will get the green light to go to contract signing and then delegation to go live!
